The last staff meeting I attended was October 2006. I left so mad from all the horse manure and what not that I have given up on staff meetings. Except I may attend a few here and there because we are paid to attend.

[...] anyway, this is why it took a lot of energy for me not to speak out. there were a lot of other stuff that sort of irked me, especially all those tidbits related to our JCAHO (which by the way, wants to be called THE Joint Commission now) preparations, but i don’t really want this post to be THAT boringly long, so i just ranted on the main issues. believe me, i didn’t mean to be sarcastic (well, maybe i did. a little bit), but do we really have to own all of the blame?
Contributing opinions and feedback is always a good thing because it shows that you are actively listening and understanding the person who is speaking. It's how you deliver the opinions and feedback that affects how others receive it. It also helps everyone learn and grow!!

I have found through the years that I can fit both of my feet in my mouth at once, and still have room to spare. The one thing I have found out however, is that voicing your opinion is not always a bad thing if done properly. I have learned that most of the "big bosses" that i have worked for are willing to listen if approached the right way. Speaking to them in their office works well for me. The person I am speaking to is in their own comfort zone so the tensions aren't as high. Also, I usually start out by acknowledging they are the boss, and that I am just there to let them hear my side of things, not to argue with them. Acknowledging their position of authority is another way of reducing the tension. If the boss doesn't feel like his/her back is against the wall, he/she won't feel threatened and will be more likely to listen better. You won't always get them to change their mind this way, but over a period of time you will gain their trust and respect. Soon after that you will see things starting to happen. The biggest key is to go in with an honest approach to exchanging information without arguing. If nothing else, by doing this you will have "gotten it off your chest."

I've learned when to voice my opinion and I choose my battles more wisely because when it's all said and done, I'm not sure it makes a difference.

I gave up on our staff meetings years ago. I haven't attended one in five+ years.
NOTHING ever gets solved, and too much time is given to people who excel at whining rather than working.
Instead I read the minutes and roll my eyes, rather than sit through two hours of nonsense while biting my tongue.
